What to see in Consuegra

Must-sees

Consuegra's image is Cerro Calderico, with its row of white windmills above the Manchego plain. You can go up on foot or by car and enter one of them, where they explain how grain was ground. At the top is also the La Muela castle, a fortress that belonged to the Order of Saint John. From the ridge you can see the whole town, the cereal fields and, in autumn, the saffron plots.

Below, the centre revolves around the Plaza de España, with the town hall and the Corredor building. Very close is the Municipal Museum, with remains from Roman times, when the place was called Consaburum. Also stroll beside the river Amarguillo and look for the remains of the Roman dam on the outskirts. If you come at the end of October you will catch the Saffron Rose Festival, and in August the medieval re-enactment.

Free tours and guided visits

Consuegra has no regular free walking tours like a big city. The usual options are guided visits to the castle and the windmills, sometimes combined with the town. It is also common to arrive on a day trip from Toledo or Madrid that combines Consuegra with other villages on the Don Quixote route, such as Campo de Criptana. To learn about saffron, there are visits to local farms during the harvest season.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the main sights. Spend about two hours on the hill, the castle and the windmills, ideally first thing or at sunset for the light. Then go down to the centre, visit the museum and have lunch around the square. If you want to combine it with other Manchego villages or Toledo, plan it as part of a two- or three-day route.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to sleep in the town, near the Plaza de España, because everything is close at hand and you can walk up the hill. There are few places to stay, mostly rural houses and the odd small hotel, so book ahead on festival dates. If you want more choice, Toledo is less than an hour away by car and works as a base for visiting Consuegra in a morning.
