What to see in Carballo

Must-sees

Carballo is the capital of the Bergantiños district and the gateway to the Costa da Morte. It is not a monumental town, but it has a pleasant centre for strolling and a good walk along the river Anllóns. Its spa tradition is old: the sulphur-water spa still operates in the centre and is a good way to end the day.

The best is on the municipality's coast. Razo and Baldaio beaches are long stretches of sand open to the Atlantic, with dunes, surfable waves and plenty of space even in summer. Next to Baldaio there is a lagoon with marshes, interesting for birdwatching. Inland and in neighbouring municipalities there are prehistoric remains such as the Dombate dolmen or the Borneiro hillfort.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Carballo. The norm is to use the town as a starting point for guided visits and trips along the Costa da Morte. The most interesting ones visit the fishing villages of Malpica, Laxe or Camariñas, the coastal lighthouses and, on a longer day, Muxía and Fisterra. There are also guided routes around the megalithic sites of Bergantiños and surfing or hiking outings on the Camiño dos Faros (Lighthouse Way), which passes through the area.

How long to spend

A morning or an afternoon is enough for the town and its spa. The municipality's coast, with Razo and Baldaio, needs another half day, and much more if you come to surf. If your idea is to get to know the Costa da Morte, allow at least two or three days: one for Malpica and Laxe, another for Camariñas and Muxía, and another for Fisterra. A Coruña is half an hour away by car.

Where to stay

If you want services and good connections, stay in central Carballo, near the spa and the riverside walk. You will have shops, restaurants and quick access to the coast and A Coruña. If you want beach and peace, the Razo area has places to stay facing the sea. To explore the district properly, a car is almost essential.
