What to see in Gaucín

Must-sees

Gaucín is a white village in the Serranía de Ronda, perched on the ridge between the Genal and Guadiaro valleys. It works like a great balcony: on clear days you can make out the Rock of Gibraltar and the coast of Morocco. The most visited sight is the Castillo del Águila, a fortress of Moorish origin on top of a crag, with the Santo Niño chapel built against its walls. The climb is short and the views are the best in the village.

Down in the village, the 16th-century parish church of San Sebastián is worth seeing, as is the Fuente de los Seis Caños in the main square. There is also a small ethnographic museum with farm tools and objects from traditional life. Wandering at leisure is part of the visit: slopes, iron grilles and flowerpots, with viewpoints opening onto the valley. For walking, the Picos de Crestellina and the river Genal are close at hand.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Gaucín. The organised activity you can find is the via ferrata up the castle rock, with guide and equipment included, aimed at those looking for a bit of adventure with views of the Strait. The village is easy to explore on your own, and the tourist office can advise on walking routes. From Ronda or the Costa del Sol there are trips combining several white villages.

How long to spend

The village and the climb to the castle take two or three hours. If you do the via ferrata, set aside another morning. With a full day you can add a short walk in the surroundings or a drive through the Genal valley. With two days there is time to visit nearby villages such as Benarrabá, Algatocín or Júzcar.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the old village lets you see everything on foot and enjoy the sunsets from the viewpoints. There are rural houses and small hotels with views, plus farmhouses in the countryside for those wanting more seclusion. The streets are steep and parking in the centre is hard, something to bear in mind. If you cannot find a room, Ronda has far more choice, and the Estepona coast is not far either.
