What to see in Miranda de Ebro

Must-sees

Miranda de Ebro is a town in north-east Burgos province, on the banks of the Ebro and very close to the borders with Álava and La Rioja. Its historic centre lies on the left bank and is reached by the Carlos III bridge, built in the 18th century after a flood destroyed the medieval bridge. The church of Espíritu Santo is the oldest, with a Romanesque apse and doorway. On the hillside stands the Renaissance church of Santa María, dedicated to the Virgen de Altamira, the town's patron saint.

Among the noble houses, the Casa de los Urbina, with cylindrical corner towers, and the Casa de las Cadenas, with an Italian Renaissance air, stand out. On the Plaza de España is the neoclassical town hall and, a little further on, the early 20th-century Teatro Apolo. To understand local history, start at the Miranda Antigua interpretation centre. Up top, by the castle remains, there are good views of the river and the town.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Miranda de Ebro. The most practical approach is to ask at the tourist office about guided visits of the historic centre or explore on your own, starting at the interpretation centre. The town also works as a base for trips into the surrounding area, such as the Pancorbo gorge, Frías or the wineries of Haro and Rioja Alavesa, best visited by car.

How long to spend

A morning or an afternoon is enough for the historic centre, the bridge and the churches. If you add the climb to the castle and a walk along the Ebro, allow a day. With two days you can visit Frías or Haro. On Whit Monday the San Juan del Monte fiesta, of National Tourist Interest, is held, with a pilgrimage to the hermitage and thousands of people in the meadow.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in the centre, between the historic quarter and the shopping area across the bridge, where you have restaurants and the train station nearby. Miranda is a major railway junction, so it's also a good base if you arrive by train. If you prefer a more rural setting, look for houses in nearby villages, or stay in Haro or Vitoria for more choice.
