What to see in Oliete

Must-sees

Oliete is a village in the Andorra-Sierra de Arcos area of Teruel province, beside the river Martín. Its old centre keeps several entrance arches, such as those of Santa Bárbara, El Pilar and Los Santos Mártires, and the 18th-century church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with a Mudéjar bell tower. The 16th-century Casa de la Donjuana is another building to look out for on your walk.

The most interesting sights are around the village. The Iberian settlement of El Palomar is a quarter of an hour's walk away, and the Cabezo de San Pedro keeps a fortress with a moat, walls and towers on a rocky platform. To make sense of both, first visit the Iberian Culture Interpretation Centre, in the old school. The landscape of empeltre olive trees, partly brought back to life by the Adopt an Olive Tree project, and the Cueva Foradada reservoir round off the visit.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Oliete. You can, however, book a visit to an olive grove and oil mill with an oil tasting, the best way to discover Bajo Aragón olive oil and the story of the olive trees that are being cared for again. For the Iberian sites, the interpretation centre is the starting point, and the area is part of the Río Martín Cultural Park.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the village, the interpretation centre and El Palomar. If you add the olive grove visit with tasting and the Cabezo de San Pedro, give it the whole day. With two days you can visit other villages on the river Martín, such as Alacón or Ariño, and some of its walking routes. In summer it is best to walk early in the morning.

Where to stay

Oliete has little accommodation, mainly holiday homes and rural houses in the village, a quiet option for waking up among olive trees. If you cannot find a room, Andorra is the nearby town with the most services. Alcañiz, a little further, has much more choice and works as a base for exploring the whole Bajo Aragón.
