What to see in Molinaseca

Must-sees

Molinaseca is a village in El Bierzo, on the banks of the river Meruelo, and one of the stops on the French Way before Ponferrada. It belongs to the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain association. You enter by the Pilgrims' Bridge, medieval in origin and the village's symbol, and just before it stands the Baroque sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias.

Across the bridge begins Calle Real, the backbone of the old village, with houses bearing coats of arms, wooden and iron balconies and the odd manor house. At the top is the church of San Nicolás de Bari, medieval in origin and neoclassical in appearance, which holds a Gothic carving of Christ on the cross. In summer, the Meruelo river beach, next to the bridge, is the meeting point for villagers and pilgrims.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Molinaseca, but you can hire a private guided tour of the old village, the bridge and Calle Real. It is a good way to understand the village's relationship with the Camino de Santiago. If you are staying in Ponferrada, there are also guided visits of the city and its Templar castle, and trips around El Bierzo that include Molinaseca.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough to explore the village at leisure: the sanctuary, the bridge, Calle Real and the church. If you come in summer, leave time for a swim in the river and lunch on a terrace. With a whole day you can combine it with Ponferrada, a few kilometres away, or drive up the Camino road towards El Acebo for the mountain scenery.

Where to stay

Ideally sleep in the old village itself or by Calle Real, where there are rural houses, guesthouses and pilgrim hostels. That way you enjoy the village in the evening, when it quietens down. Bear in mind that in the Camino's high season many places fill early. If you cannot find a room, Ponferrada has much more choice and is a short drive away.
