What to see in Lepe

Must-sees

Lepe is on the western coast of Huelva, between the mouth of the Piedras river and the Portuguese border. The town lies a few kilometres inland and lives mainly from growing strawberries. In the centre is the Mudéjar church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, home to the image of the Virgen de la Bella, the local patron. On the outskirts, on the way to El Terrón, is the chapel dedicated to the same Virgin, the destination of the town's most popular pilgrimage.

The other side of Lepe is the coast. La Antilla is its main beach, long and with a promenade. To the east, El Terrón is a small fishing port looking across to El Rompido, a good place to eat fish. Between the two stands the Torre del Catalán, a 16th-century watchtower built to keep a lookout for pirates. From the area you can see the Piedras river marshes and the Flecha de Nueva Umbría, a natural area of sandbanks and wetlands.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Lepe. The town tourist office has information on what to see in town and on the coast, and the most practical plan is to explore the centre, La Antilla and El Terrón on your own. For guided visits, Huelva city and the Columbus sites are under an hour away, and day trips to Seville or the Algarve leave from the coast.

How long to spend

The town can be seen in a relaxed morning: the church, the central squares and the chapel of La Bella. Lepe is above all a beach destination, so most people stay several days, alternating La Antilla with meals in El Terrón and walks on the Flecha de Nueva Umbría. A weekend gives you time for everything, and if you want to explore further, add a day for Isla Cristina, Ayamonte or El Rompido.

Where to stay

Most of the accommodation is on the coast. La Antilla has beachfront apartments and hotels and is the best choice if you are travelling as a family and want to get around on foot. Islantilla, shared with Isla Cristina, has more large hotels and a golf course. Staying in Lepe town makes sense if you want lower prices or are travelling out of season. In summer, book well ahead, as the coast fills up.
