What to see in Sagunto

Must-sees

Sagunto is famous for Hannibal’s siege in 219 BC, which sparked the Second Punic War. Its castle covers the whole hilltop and layers Iberian, Roman, Islamic and Christian remains. Walking its enclosures is the best way to grasp the town’s long history.

On the hillside is the Roman theatre, restored at the end of the 20th century in an intervention that still sparks debate. Heading down to the old town you will find the Jewish quarter, with narrow, steep streets, and the church of Santa María. In Puerto de Sagunto, a few kilometres away, Blast Furnace No. 2 recalls the area’s steelmaking past.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours in Sagunto usually cover the old town, the Jewish quarter and the area around the Roman theatre, on a pay-what-you-like basis. For the castle and the theatre a guided visit is advisable, as the layers of history are hard to interpret without explanation. Sagunto is often visited on a half-day trip from Valencia, very close by, combined with the beach or the industrial heritage of El Puerto.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the castle, the theatre and the Jewish quarter. For a full day, keep the morning for the upper town and the afternoon for Puerto de Sagunto, with the blast furnace and the beach. With more time, Sagunto makes a quiet base for exploring Valencia. Avoid the middle of the day in summer, as the climb to the castle has little shade and the sun is fierce.

Where to stay

Sagunto’s historic centre is ideal if you are coming for the monuments: the castle and the theatre will be a few minutes’ walk away. Puerto de Sagunto has more choice by the sea, with a beach and promenade, and is a good option in summer. Both areas have commuter rail links with Valencia.
