What to see in Redondela

Must-sees

Redondela sits at the head of the Vigo estuary, beside the San Simón inlet, and is known as the town of the viaducts. Two great 19th-century railway bridges pass over the houses and define the town's image. The Portuguese Way to Santiago runs through the centre, and the inland and coastal variants meet here, so you'll see pilgrims almost all year round. It's worth strolling the old town, seeing the church of Santiago and visiting the Vilavella convent.

The big visit is on the water. San Simón island, in the middle of the inlet, was a quarantine station for sailors and, after the Civil War, a concentration camp and prison. Today it's a place of remembrance with gardens and restored buildings, linked by a bridge to the small island of San Antón. From the shore, Cesantes beach offers the best view of the islands and a good place to swim in summer.

Free tours and guided visits

Redondela has a couple of guided activities. The most interesting is the trip to San Simón island, which can only be visited in an organised group and tells its history as a quarantine station and a prison. The other is a free walking tour of the centre on mysteries and legends, an entertaining way to get to know the town. Estuary excursions from Vigo also pass through the inlet.

How long to spend

The old town and the viaducts can be seen in a couple of hours. If you add the San Simón island visit, allow half a day or a relaxed full day, adding some time on Cesantes beach. Redondela also works well as a day stop if you're in Vigo, which is very close, or as a stage on the Portuguese Way.

Where to stay

If you're walking the Way or want to get around on foot, the most practical option is the centre, near the pilgrim route and the train station. For a beach-focused plan, Cesantes and the shore of the inlet are quieter, with views of the islands. If you want more choice and city life, Vigo is a few minutes away by car or train.
