What to see in Hervás

Must-sees

Hervás is known for its Jewish quarter, one of the best preserved in Spain. Its narrow, sloping streets run down to the river Ambroz between adobe and timber-framed houses, with overhanging eaves and balconies. Calle Rabilero and the area around the vanished synagogue hold the oldest atmosphere. Above, on the remains of an old castle, is the church of Santa María, with good views of the valley.

In the village you can visit the Pérez Comendador-Leroux Museum, devoted to the sculptor born here, and a classic motorcycle museum. Beyond the village, the Ambroz valley offers chestnut and oak woods. The Castañar del Gallego is a pleasant walk, especially in autumn. Nearby are the Baños de Montemayor spa and the Roman arch of Cáparra, on the Vía de la Plata.

Free tours and guided visits

Hervás has guided walks around the Jewish quarter, sometimes on a pay-what-you-like basis, explaining the history of the Jewish community and its departure after the 1492 expulsion. Beyond the village, guided excursions are the norm: routes through the chestnut woods, trips to Cáparra and Granadilla or tours of the Jerte valley in blossom season.

How long to spend

The historic centre can be seen well in half a day, with time to climb to Santa María and visit a museum. With a full day you can add a walk in the Castañar del Gallego or a stretch of the greenway. If you stay two or three days, use them to see Cáparra, Baños de Montemayor, Granadilla and the Jerte valley.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the old town lets you stroll the Jewish quarter when there are fewer people, first thing or at dusk. There are hotels and rural houses in the centre and on the outskirts, surrounded by greenery. If you are driving and want to explore the valley, anywhere in the village works, because distances are short. Baños de Montemayor is another nearby option.
