What to see in Manilva

Must-sees

Manilva is at the western tip of the Costa del Sol, between Estepona and the province of Cádiz. Its best-known sight is the Duquesa castle, an 18th-century fortress by the sea that now houses a small museum. Next to it is Puerto de la Duquesa, with restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere at sunset.

In Sabinillas are the remains of a Roman villa, and on the border with Casares the Baños de la Hedionda, sulphur springs used since Roman times. Manilva village, up the hill, has the church of Santa Ana and a long tradition of Muscat vineyards. The beaches at Sabinillas and La Duquesa are wide and easy for families.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Manilva. What does run are guided visits to the castle and its museum and Roman heritage walks, sometimes organised by the town. Among the most useful trips are Gibraltar, Casares and the Serranía de Ronda, plus boat trips along the coast from the marina.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for Manilva: the castle, a stroll round the marina and a visit to the Baños de la Hedionda. If you are on holiday, allow a week and use it as a base: a day for Gibraltar, another for Casares, another for Ronda or Marbella, and the rest for the beach. The trips are easy by car.

Where to stay

La Duquesa is the most pleasant area to stay: the marina, the castle and the beach are on foot, and road links are good. Sabinillas is more local, with shops and a promenade, and usually a little cheaper. Manilva village, inland, is quieter but means using the car for almost everything.
