What to see in Villaseca de la Sagra

Must-sees

Villaseca de la Sagra is a village in the La Sagra area, in northern Toledo province, by the Tagus plain and halfway between Toledo and Aranjuez. Its centre is the rectangular Plaza Mayor, lined with two-storey buildings, some with wooden balconies. On it stands the palace of the Marquises of Montemayor, now the town hall, and the monument to the master potters.

Very close rises the brick church of Santa Leocadia, with a tower visible from afar; inside it keeps a 17th-century silver processional monstrance. Another interesting building is the old hospital of San Bernardo, with its chapel, now a cultural centre. The outskirts complete the visit with the hermitage of Las Angustias and the Ribera del Tajo park, in the old Aceca quarter, with picnic areas by the river.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or organised activities for visitors in Villaseca de la Sagra. Most people explore on their own, as the centre is small and the main buildings are close together. If you are interested in guided visits, Toledo, a few kilometres away, has a huge range of free walking tours and themed routes, and day trips to Toledo and Aranjuez also leave from Madrid.

How long to spend

The village can be explored in a couple of hours: the Plaza Mayor, the church, San Bernardo and a walk to the hermitage of Las Angustias. If you add the park by the Tagus you can fill a relaxed morning. The usual plan is to combine it with Toledo or Aranjuez on the same day. During the festivities of Las Angustias the village changes completely and is much livelier.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Villaseca de la Sagra is very limited, so the practical option is to sleep in Toledo, about twenty minutes away by car, where you can choose between the historic centre and quieter areas outside the walls with easy parking. Aranjuez is the other good option, with accommodation near the Royal Palace and gardens. If you are touring La Sagra, nearby towns such as Illescas also have hotels.
