What to see in Hornachuelos

Must-sees

Hornachuelos is a white village in western Córdoba, perched over a ravine above the Bembézar river and the gateway to the Sierra de Hornachuelos Nature Park. At the top, inside the old walled enclosure and beside the castle remains, stands the church of Santa María de las Flores, Mudéjar in tradition with a late Gothic doorway. Strolling its cobbled streets and viewpoints, with views over the valley, is the best way to start.

The mountains are the big draw. The nature park is a sea of holm and cork oaks home to red deer, wild boar and one of the largest griffon vulture colonies in Andalusia. The Huerta del Rey visitor centre, a kilometre from the village, is the starting point for trails such as Las Herrerías, with old lime kilns, or the Guadalora river trail. In autumn, the deer rut draws many wildlife enthusiasts.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular organised visits in Hornachuelos. The usual way is to explore the village on your own and ask about trails at the nature park visitor centre. Some routes, such as the Bembézar river trail, require prior permission from the environmental authorities. From Córdoba there are nature excursions into the Sierra Morena, and Almodóvar del Río, with its castle, is on the way.

How long to spend

Two hours are enough for the village, the church and the viewpoints. If you want to walk a trail in the nature park, allow a full day. With two days you can combine several routes, visit the hamlet of San Calixto deep in the hills and stop at Almodóvar del Río on the way back to Córdoba.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village is limited: a few rural houses and small places in the centre, convenient for setting off early on walks. There are also farmhouses and rural houses scattered through the hills, ideal if you want silence and nature, though you'll need a car. If you can't find a room, Palma del Río, about twenty minutes away, has more options, and Córdoba is the alternative with the most variety.
