What to see in Turégano

Must-sees

Turégano is a town in Segovia province, in the Tierra de Pinares area, dominated by one of the most original castles in Castile. On an ancient hillfort and an earlier fortification stood the Romanesque church of San Miguel, which in the 15th and 16th centuries was wrapped in towers and walls until it became a castle church. From the top the view takes in the whole Segovian plain.

At the foot of the castle opens the Plaza Mayor, very large and lined with arcades, where village life happens. It's also worth going into the church of Santiago, Romanesque in origin, and strolling the central streets with their stone houses. The castle served as a prison for Antonio Pérez, secretary to Philip II, an episode that comes up on almost every visit.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Turégano. What does exist is the guided visit to the castle, which is the only way in, and it's best to book ahead as the time slots change with the season. For the church of Santiago, check with the town council. If you're coming from Segovia, the village fits well into a driving tour of the province.

How long to spend

Two or three hours give you time for the castle visit, the Plaza Mayor and the church of Santiago. If you want to have lunch in the village and stroll without hurrying, allow half a day. Ideally, combine it on the same day with Segovia, Pedraza or Sepúlveda, all less than an hour away.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay around the Plaza Mayor or in the streets climbing to the castle, where there are rural houses and a small place or two. Accommodation is limited, so book ahead for weekends. Segovia, about half an hour's drive away, is the alternative with more beds.
