What to see in Cambados

Must-sees

Cambados is the capital of Albariño and one of the most elegant towns on the Ría de Arousa. The starting point is the Plaza de Fefiñáns, large and cobbled, closed off by the Fefiñáns pazo, a church and an arch linking the buildings. From there, the historic centre is explored on foot among houses bearing coats of arms, arcades and stone streets. The pazo de Bazán, facing the sea, now houses a parador.

Very close by are the ruins of Santa Mariña de Dozo, a roofless Gothic church next to the cemetery, with striking arches. The fishermen's quarter of San Tomé keeps low fishermen's houses and, offshore, the remains of the San Sadurniño tower. Every summer Cambados holds the Albariño Festival, and its streets have many taverns where you can try the wine with seafood.

Free tours and guided visits

In a town the size of Cambados, pay-what-you-like free walking tours are scarce. The usual format is guided visits of the historic centre and, above all, winery visits in the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin, with an explanation of how the grapes are grown and an Albariño tasting. From here it is also easy to take trips to the island of A Toxa, O Grove and boat rides on the Ría de Arousa.

How long to spend

About four hours are enough to see the historic centre, the Plaza de Fefiñáns, Santa Mariña de Dozo and San Tomé, with time for lunch. If you want to add one or two winery visits, allow a full day. With two or three days you can use Cambados as a base for O Grove, A Toxa, the island of Arousa and other towns on the ría.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to stay in the historic centre or near the Plaza de Fefiñáns, because everything is a few minutes' walk away and you will have taverns and restaurants all around. The seafront has views of the ría and is a pleasant area for a sunset stroll. If you are driving and want more peace, the surroundings have rural houses and places to stay among the vineyards.
