What to see in Arganza

Must-sees

Arganza is a municipality in El Bierzo, in the west of the province of León, surrounded by vineyards and market gardens. Its villages keep traditional Bierzo architecture, with houses of stone and slate and wooden galleries. Its best-known sight is the Palacio de Canedo, in the village of the same name, an 18th-century building of stone and slate that has been restored and now houses a winery with its own vineyards, a shop and a restaurant.

The great attraction of the area is wine. Arganza lies within the Bierzo Designation of Origin, where the Mencía grape reigns, and the tracks between the vines make for gentle walks with views over the valley. A few kilometres away is Cacabelos, on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, and a little further on Villafranca del Bierzo. Ponferrada, with its Templar castle, and Las Médulas, a World Heritage Site, are within easy reach for a day trip.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Arganza. What the area offers is vineyard and winery visits with Bierzo wine tastings, where you walk through the vines, see how the wine is made and try several wines. It is the best way to understand the landscape. For heritage tours, Ponferrada and Villafranca del Bierzo have more on offer, and trips to Las Médulas leave from around the area.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for Canedo, a winery visit and a walk among the vineyards. To get to know El Bierzo properly, stay two or three days: one for wine and the villages of Arganza, another for Ponferrada and Cacabelos, and another for Las Médulas. The grape harvest, in late summer and early autumn, is a lovely time to go, with the vineyards changing colour.

Where to stay

The municipality has rural houses and the odd rural hotel in restored buildings, a good choice if you want to sleep among the vines in silence. Cacabelos, very close, has more accommodation thanks to the Camino de Santiago, with guesthouses and pilgrim hostels. If you prefer a town with more services, Ponferrada is the most practical base for getting around the area, and Villafranca del Bierzo is a more charming alternative.
