What to see in Iznájar

Must-sees

Iznájar is a white village in southern Córdoba, on the border with Granada and Málaga, built on a peninsula jutting into the Iznájar reservoir, the largest in Andalusia. On top rises the castle of Hisn Ashar, of Andalusi origin, with its keep and walls overlooking the water. Next to it are the church of Santiago Apóstol and the square dedicated to Rafael Alberti.

Heading down, the Patio de las Comedias and the flower-pot-filled Plaza de la Torre are the most photographed spots. Don’t miss the viewpoints, such as the Cruz de San Pedro, with views of the castle and the reservoir. On the shore is Valdearenas, a sandy stretch that works as an inland beach in summer, and the reservoir interpretation centre.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Iznájar. Most people explore the village on their own, following the viewpoints and squares, and visit the castle, which has activities for visitors. On the reservoir there are boat trips and water sports, and nearby there are visits to olive oil mills to learn about the local oil. From Córdoba or Málaga, some excursions combine Iznájar with other villages.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the village, the castle and the viewpoints. If you want to add a boat trip or an afternoon at Valdearenas, allow a full day, especially in summer. With two days you can visit Rute or Priego de Córdoba, in the Subbética, or walk a route along the reservoir shore.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the old town lets you see the village lit up and walk to the viewpoints. There are also many rural cottages and farmhouses scattered across the hamlets and along the reservoir, ideal if you have a car and want a pool and views. If you cannot find a room, Rute and Lucena have more choice and are a short distance away.
