What to see in La Carolina

Must-sees

La Carolina is an Enlightenment foundation. It was born in the 18th century as the capital of the New Settlements of Sierra Morena, Charles III’s project to colonise the road between Madrid and Andalusia, and it shows in its straight streets and broad squares. The centre is the square of the church of La Inmaculada Concepción, once a convent of Discalced Carmelites, and opposite it the Intendant Olavide’s Palace, a Neoclassical building recalling the man who led the colonisation.

Around town you will also see the hermitage and monument to Saint John of the Cross, the town’s patron, the Customs Towers and the town hall. The mining past, linked to lead, left headframes and remains scattered across the municipality. A few kilometres away, in Navas de Tolosa, a monument recalls the battle of 1212, fought on these lands. Despeñaperros is very close for walking.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in La Carolina. Most people stroll the centre on their own, as its grid layout is easy to follow, and ask at the town hall whether there are organised visits to the founding heritage or the mining remains. For nature, the Despeñaperros Natural Park has waymarked routes. If you are staying in Úbeda, Baeza or Linares, you can come on a day trip.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the historic centre, with the church, the palace and the squares. If you want to see the Navas de Tolosa monument and some mining remains, give it the whole day. With two days you can also do a route in Despeñaperros or visit Vilches and Giribaile, a short drive away.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to sleep in the centre, near the church square, to get around on foot with bars and restaurants at hand. The town is next to the Andalusia motorway, so there are also places to stay at the exits, useful if you are passing through or driving. If you prefer the countryside, look for rural cottages towards Despeñaperros or Santa Elena. Linares, less than half an hour away, has more choice.
