What to see in Bailén

Must-sees

Bailén is in the north of Jaén province, by the motorway linking Madrid with Andalusia, and its name is tied to the battle of 1808, the first major defeat of a Napoleonic army in open field. The Bailén Battle Museum explains how the fighting unfolded and what it meant in the Peninsular War. The town has other places linked to that episode, such as the Huerta de San Lázaro, whose waterwheel marked the line between the two armies, or the Paseo de las Palmeras, with an allegorical monument to the battle.

The most representative building is the church of La Encarnación, built in reddish sandstone between the 15th and 16th centuries, with an octagonal tower visible from several streets. The hermitages of La Soledad and La Limpia y Pura are worth a stroll, as is El Vivero park, a late 19th-century botanical garden. Bailén also has a long tradition of pottery and brickmaking, and olive groves stretch all around the town.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Bailén. What you will find are visits to local oil mills with olive oil tastings, explaining the process from tree to bottle. The battle museum is the other visit with explained content. If you want to see more, Baños de la Encina, with its Andalusi castle, is very close.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the museum, the church and a stroll round the centre. If you add an oil mill visit with a tasting, allow a full, unhurried day. With a second day you can visit Baños de la Encina or Andújar and the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park, a short drive away.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to stay in the centre, near the church and the museum, to get around on foot. By the motorway there are places to stay for people passing through, practical if you arrive late or move on the next day. If you prefer a quieter setting, Baños de la Encina has rural cottages, and Andújar or Linares offer more variety.
