What to see in Carrascalejo

Must-sees

Carrascalejo is a small village in the east of the province of Cáceres, in the Jara cacereña area, close to the border with Toledo. It has barely a couple of hundred inhabitants and is part of the Villuercas Ibores Jara UNESCO Global Geopark. Today it is a quiet place, with low houses around the parish church and a landscape of hills, holm oaks, rockrose and olive trees.

The main appeal lies in the countryside. The local olive groves produce extra virgin olive oil, and seeing them up close is the best way to understand village life. A few kilometres away, in Villar del Pedroso, is the Pedroso gorge, a canyon carved into granite that is one of the geopark's geosites and the starting point of the Camino Real de Guadalupe.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Carrascalejo. The activity you can book is a walk through the village olive groves with a tasting of the oils made there, explaining the process from tree to bottle. To discover the rest of the area, the geopark offers hiking routes and signposted geosites, and Guadalupe has a tourist office for information.

How long to spend

The village is quick to see, and the olive grove visit with tasting lasts a couple of hours. Ideally give the area a day: the olive oil tour in Carrascalejo in the morning and a walk through the Pedroso gorge in the afternoon. With a second day you can head to Guadalupe and its Royal Monastery, a World Heritage Site, or explore other parts of the geopark.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Carrascalejo is very scarce, so the usual choice is rural houses in neighbouring villages such as Villar del Pedroso or Navatrasierra, a few kilometres away. They are good bases for combining olive oil with routes through La Jara. If you want more services, Guadalupe has more hotels and restaurants, and across the provincial border El Puente del Arzobispo and Talavera de la Reina widen the choice.
