What to see in Torre-Pacheco

Must-sees

Torre-Pacheco is in the heart of the Campo de Cartagena, a farming plain between Murcia and the Mar Menor. Its most recognisable sight is the Mediterranean-style windmills, with lateen sails, once used to grind grain and draw water. The mid-19th-century El Pasico mill stands next to the hermitage of the same name, which holds an image of the Virgin much venerated in the area. It is the municipality's most typical stop and a good place for a stroll.

The other big visit is the Cabezo Gordo, an isolated hill visible from the whole plain. On its slope is the Sima de las Palomas, a site with Neanderthal remains studied by the University of Murcia. In the municipality you will also find the Castillo de Ros, in Balsicas. The Campo de Cartagena melon has its own festival here.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Torre-Pacheco, but there is the odd organised activity, such as a winery visit with a tasting of Murcia region wines and an aperitif. The tourist office also runs occasional guided visits, including the windmill route with entry to El Pasico and outings to the Cabezo Gordo. Check the calendar before you go, as they are not daily.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the El Pasico hermitage and windmill, the centre and a walk on the Cabezo Gordo. If you add the winery visit, allow the full day. Torre-Pacheco works well as part of a trip around the Mar Menor or Cartagena, so ideally give it a day within a longer break in the area.

Where to stay

Torre-Pacheco itself has little accommodation, but the municipality has several residential golf complexes, especially around Roldán, with apartments and holiday lets. If you prefer the beach, the shore of the Mar Menor is a few kilometres away, with much more choice in Los Alcázares or San Javier. Cartagena and Murcia are another good alternative if you want a city atmosphere.
