What to see in Lastres

Must-sees

Lastres is a fishing village on the Colunga coast, built on a hillside above the harbour. It is best explored on foot, heading down its steep streets of houses with glazed balconies to the quays. Along the way you pass the 18th-century church of Santa María de Sábada and the clock tower. At the top, the San Roque viewpoint gives a wide view of the village, the sea and the Sierra del Sueve. Many people recognise it as the setting of a well-known Spanish TV series.

The surroundings are part of the so-called Dinosaur Coast. Very close by is the Jurassic Museum of Asturias, on top of a cliff, and on La Griega beach you can see fossil footprints at low tide. It is also worth climbing to the Fito viewpoint in the Sierra del Sueve, from where you can see the coast and the Picos de Europa on clear days.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are not common in Lastres. The usual options are guided visits to the old village and the harbour, sometimes organised in high season, and guided routes along the Dinosaur Coast to see footprints on the local beaches. From here you can also take trips to Villaviciosa, Ribadesella or Cangas de Onís, as well as nature outings in the Sierra del Sueve. The Jurassic Museum visit can be rounded off with a guided activity inside the centre itself.

How long to spend

The village is easily explored in two or three hours, with time to climb to the viewpoint and eat by the harbour. If you want to add the Jurassic Museum and the La Griega footprints, allow a full day. With two days you can spend the second at the Fito, Ribadesella or the Covadonga Lakes.

Where to stay

The most comfortable choice is to sleep in Lastres itself, in the upper streets or near the harbour, to enjoy the village once the day visitors leave. Colunga, a few kilometres away, has more choice and good road access. Rural houses inland in the municipality are a good option if you want peace and have a car.
