What to see in La Vall d'Uixó

Must-sees

La Vall d'Uixó is in the south of Castellón province, at the foot of the Serra d'Espadà and very close to the coast. Its big draw is the Coves de Sant Josep, which hold an underground river explored by boat through galleries and rock vaults. It is one of the longest navigable underground rivers in Europe, and the visit combines the boat trip with a stretch on foot.

Next to the caves is the Iberian settlement of Sant Josep, with remains of houses on a hill, and the town keeps the Sant Josep aqueduct. The town grew from the union of two old villages, which explains why it has two main churches, the Ángel Custodio and the Asunción. Walking routes lead from here into the Serra d'Espadà Natural Park.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in La Vall d'Uixó, nor fixed activities on the big platforms. The star visit, the Coves de Sant Josep, is always done with a guide by boat, and booking is advisable in high season. For the rest of the town, the tourist office will tell you what there is to see. There are trips from Valencia and Castellón that include the caves.

How long to spend

The caves and the Iberian settlement can be seen in a morning. If you add a stroll around the centre and the aqueduct, allow about five hours. With an extra day you can do a route in the Serra d'Espadà or head to Moncofa beach, a few kilometres away.
