What to see in Mayorga

Must-sees

Mayorga is a town in Tierra de Campos, in the north-west of the province of Valladolid, by the Cea river. It is a land of cereal fields and mud and brick architecture, and its Mudéjar churches are the best example. Santa María de Arbas, Mudéjar in origin, is one of the most striking, and in the old town you will also find the jurisdictional pillar.

The most unusual visit is the Bread Museum, housed in a former church, which explains the whole cereal cycle, from sowing to the oven, and the role of bread in Castilian culture. The Madrid route of the Camino de Santiago also passes through Mayorga, so you will often meet pilgrims. The town is known for El Vítor, the festival in honour of Santo Toribio, in which a night procession winds through the streets with burning wineskins.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Mayorga. The activity you can book is a visit to the Bread Museum, which usually includes an explanation of the exhibition and is the best way to understand the area. The rest of the town is easy to see on your own. If you are touring Tierra de Campos, Mayorga fits into a driving route with Medina de Rioseco or Sahagún.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the Bread Museum and a walk round the churches and the old town. If you want to have lunch in town and walk along the Cea, give it the day. With two days you can complete the Tierra de Campos route and visit Sahagún, across the border in León, with its brick churches.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Mayorga is limited, with a few rural houses and pilgrim hostels in the old town, near the square. For more choice, Valencia de Don Juan and Sahagún are under half an hour's drive away, and Medina de Rioseco is another convenient base for exploring Tierra de Campos. If you are going during the festival, book ahead.
