What to see in La Granja de San Ildefonso

Must-sees

La Granja de San Ildefonso is a Royal Site at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, about eleven kilometres from Segovia. Philip V had a French-inspired palace built here, and it is the village's main sight. Inside you can see the reception rooms, the Baroque decoration and a tapestry museum. Next to it is the collegiate church, where Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese are buried.

The gardens are the most famous part. They spread across the hillside with walks, statues and monumental fountains, such as the Fama fountain or the Baths of Diana, which only run on special dates. In the village, the Royal Glass Factory, now the National Glass Centre, is worth a visit; it explains the history of glassmaking and sometimes has glassblowing demonstrations. Stroll its streets too, with houses from the time of the court.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are not frequent in La Granja. The usual approach is to visit the palace with a guide, as that makes court life and the decoration of the rooms easier to understand, and to explore the gardens on your own. Many people arrive on an organised trip from Madrid that combines the Royal Site with Segovia on the same day.

You can also visit the palace of Riofrío, another nearby Royal Site surrounded by woodland with fallow deer. For nature, there are guided routes in the Montes de Valsaín and the Sierra de Guadarrama, and the national park interpretation centre has information on trails. Around the village there are many areas for walks among the pines.

How long to spend

Allow half a day or a full day for La Granja. Spend about two hours on the palace and the collegiate church, another two on the gardens and one more on the Royal Glass Factory. If you coincide with a fountain day, plan the day around that moment. With two days you can add Riofrío, a walk in Valsaín or a visit to Segovia.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to sleep in the village centre, near the palace and the Royal Glass Factory. You will have everything on foot and, once the tour groups leave, the streets are very quiet. If you want to explore more of the sierra, Valsaín is an option among the pines. And if your main plan is Segovia, you can stay in the city and come to La Granja by bus or car.
