What to see in Alcalá de Guadaíra

Must-sees

Alcalá de Guadaíra stands on the doorstep of Seville, on the banks of the river that gives it its name. Its great monument is the Almohad castle, one of the largest fortified enclosures in Andalusia, which dominates the town from a hill. Inside the walls is the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Águila, and next to the fortress an interpretation centre explains its history.

The river Guadaíra is the other big draw. For centuries its flour mills supplied Seville with bread, which is why Alcalá is known as the town of bakers. Today several of those mills can be seen along the riverside paths, and Oromana park, with pine woods by the river, is the ideal place for a walk. In the centre, the church of Santiago stands out, and the old flour factory has become a cultural space.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Alcalá de Guadaíra. The town council runs guided visits to the castle at some times of year, including night visits, and the tourist office will tell you what is on when you go. You can explore the rest on your own along the river paths. Being so close to Seville, many travellers combine the visit with a free walking tour of the city centre.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the castle, the old town and a walk by the river. If you want to explore Oromana park and the mills at leisure, or have lunch in town and try its bread, give it a full day. It is a very easy trip from Seville, about twenty minutes by car or public transport.

Where to stay

If you sleep in Alcalá, the centre is best, near the main square and at the foot of the castle, from where you can walk to the river. The choice is limited and geared more to business trips, so many travellers prefer to stay in Seville, which has far more options, and visit on a half-day or full-day trip.
