What to see in Casar de Cáceres

Must-sees

Casar de Cáceres lies about ten kilometres north of Cáceres and is known throughout Spain for the Torta del Casar, a creamy sheep's milk cheese with Designation of Origin. So the most logical visit is the Cheese Museum, in a traditional house, which explains how the torta is made and what life was like for the village's families.

The centre has simple granite and whitewash architecture. The 16th-century Gothic church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the most important building. Around it are several chapels, such as Santiago, beside the Vía de la Plata, La Soledad, with sgraffito on its façade, and San Bartolomé. Casar is also a stop on the Vía de la Plata route of the Camino de Santiago and has an interpretation centre devoted to transhumance and the Cañada Soriana drovers' road.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Casar de Cáceres. The activity on offer is a visit to a cheese maker, where you see how Torta del Casar is made and finish with a tasting. It is the ideal complement to the Cheese Museum. For the rest of the village, the tourist office is the best starting point, and if you are staying in Cáceres you can plan it as a short half-day trip.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the museum, the church, the chapels and a cheese maker visit with tasting. If you like walking, you can add a stroll through the dehesa boyal or a stretch of the Vía de la Plata. Most people combine it with Cáceres, so one day covers both without rushing.

Where to stay

Casar itself has a few rural houses and small places to stay, convenient if you are walking the Vía de la Plata or want a quiet atmosphere. Choice is limited, so the most practical option is usually to stay in Cáceres, a quarter of an hour's drive away. There, the monumental old town and the Plaza Mayor are the most pleasant area for getting around on foot in the evening.
