What to see in Liérganes

Must-sees

Liérganes is a village in the Miera valley, in Cantabria, with a well-preserved historic centre. The most photographed spot is the main bridge over the river, beside which stands a sculpture of the Fish Man, the local who, according to legend, vanished into the water and reappeared years later in the Bay of Cádiz. The nearby streets have 17th and 18th-century mansions and palaces.

Above the village rise two rounded twin hills visible from all over the valley. A few kilometres away, in La Cavada, are the remains of the old Royal Artillery Factory, with a small museum. Liérganes also had a thermal spa that made it famous in the 19th century and is still in operation.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are rare in Liérganes. The usual options are guided visits of the historic centre, telling the legend of the Fish Man and the history of its mansions, and the visit to the cannon factory museum in La Cavada. Trips also run from here to the Cabárceno nature park, the Pas valleys and Santander, less than an hour away. For nature, there are guided walks in the Miera valley and the nearby hills.

How long to spend

The village takes two or three relaxed hours, with time for lunch. With a full day you can add La Cavada and a riverside walk. If you stay two or three days, Liérganes is a handy base for Cabárceno, the Pas valleys and Santander. On weekdays the village is quieter than at weekends and on holidays.

Where to stay

The best choice is to sleep in the historic centre or by the river, near the main bridge, so you can stroll at night without the car. The spa is another option if you want rest. The rural houses around the Miera valley are quiet and practical if you want to explore inland Cantabria.
