What to see in Gualchos

Must-sees

Gualchos is a municipality on the Costa Tropical of Granada with two faces. Up above, about 330 metres above the sea at the foot of the Sierra de Lújar, is the village of Gualchos, with white streets and views of the Mediterranean. Its church of San Miguel was built in the early 16th century over an old mosque and keeps a striking tower. In the village you can also visit the Fuente la Mina, once a cistern and wash house and now a viewpoint.

Down on the coast is Castell de Ferro, the municipal capital, with its Nasrid castle on a hilltop and beaches at the mouth of the dry riverbed. To the west the coast becomes rugged and coves appear. The best known is La Rijana, next to a rocky outcrop with archaeological remains and a late 16th-century watchtower, very popular for diving. Inland, towards the Pico del Águila, the hills are covered in esparto grass, dwarf palm and thyme.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Gualchos. What is on offer is sea activities, such as kayak and snorkelling trips around La Rijana cove and the nearby coast, usually in small guided groups. The upper village and Castell de Ferro are easy to explore on your own. If you want guided cultural visits, Motril, Salobreña and Almuñécar, a short drive away, have more variety.

How long to spend

Gualchos village and its viewpoint take an hour. Castell de Ferro and its castle, another. Most people spend a full day: the morning for the upper village and a sea activity at La Rijana, and the afternoon on the Castell beach. If you have come to relax, three or four days let you combine the beach with trips to the Alpujarra or other coastal villages.

Where to stay

Castell de Ferro is the best base, with apartments, guesthouses and small hotels near the beach, and bars and services close at hand. If you prefer peace and views, Gualchos village and the hills around it have rural houses, although you will need a car. Calahonda and Motril, to the west, widen the choice if you want another type of accommodation or more going on.
