What to see in Estepona

Must-sees

Estepona’s old town is its biggest surprise. Its white streets are full of colourful flowerpots and each street has its own colour. Plaza de las Flores is the heart of the neighbourhood. Nearby are the remains of San Luis castle and the Clock Tower, which dates from the Middle Ages.

All over town there are large murals painted on building fronts, which you can follow as a route. The Orchid House, next to the centre, is a large greenhouse with thousands of plants. The promenade runs along La Rada beach to the port, with fish restaurants and a market on Sundays.

Free tours and guided visits

There are some free walking tours of the old town, although fewer than in Málaga or Marbella. They usually cover the flower streets, Plaza de las Flores, the Clock Tower and several murals, and explain how Estepona went from fishing village to resort. On Sundays the centre is livelier.

Among the day trips, the most popular is the visit to Gibraltar, which is very close. There are also trips to Ronda and to white villages such as Casares, in the mountains. Boat trips to see dolphins leave from the port, and Marbella is close enough to spend half a day in its old town.

How long to spend

One day is enough to see Estepona: the morning for the old town and the murals, and the afternoon for the promenade and the port. If you are on holiday, allow a week, combining the beach with trips to Gibraltar, Ronda and Casares. Three or four days are enough if you want something in between.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay in the centre or near La Rada beach. You will have the old town, the promenade and restaurants on foot, without depending on a car. Outside the centre there are many developments and seafront resorts, quieter and with pools, but you will need a car or taxi to go out for dinner or a walk.
