What to see in Daimiel

Must-sees

The big reason to come to Daimiel is the Tablas de Daimiel National Park, one of the most important wetlands in the Iberian Peninsula. It is formed where the Guadiana and the Cigüela meet and is explored along wooden boardwalks and trails leaving from the visitor centre. Ducks, herons, grebes and many other birds are easy to see, especially in autumn and winter.

The other key visit is the Motilla del Azuer, a Bronze Age site with a fortification and a well that reached down to the groundwater. It is one of the most important of its period in Europe. In town, the churches of Santa María and San Pedro, the Plaza de España and the Regional Museum help you understand the area's history.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Daimiel. The norm is guided visits, and in the case of the Motilla del Azuer they are the only way to see it: book in advance. In the National Park, the visitor centre offers free guided routes on certain dates, and there are also specialist birdwatching guides.

From Daimiel it is easy to organise trips around the Campo de Calatrava. Almagro, with its Corral de Comedias and arcaded square, is very close. You can also visit the Ojos del Guadiana or Ciudad Real, the provincial capital, about thirty kilometres away. All these visits are best done with your own car.

How long to spend

With a full day you can see the essentials. Spend the morning at Las Tablas, when there is more bird activity and less heat, and the afternoon at the Motilla del Azuer and on a stroll around town. If you are into birdwatching or want to add Almagro, stay two days. Before you go, check the state of the wetland, because water levels vary greatly by year and season.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay in central Daimiel, near the Plaza de España, where the services, restaurants and road to the park are. The National Park is about eleven kilometres away, so you will need a car. If you want peace and countryside, there are rural houses in the surroundings. Almagro is another good base if you want to combine both visits.
