What to see in Salou

Must-sees

Salou is a Costa Daurada resort made for summer, with wide beaches of fine sand and calm water. The best known are Llevant and Ponent, joined by the palm-lined Passeig de Jaume I, with the Font Lluminosa, a fountain with light shows. In the coves of Cap de Salou, such as Cala dels Capellans, it’s quieter.

For a walk, the coastal path runs along the shore between coves and low cliffs. In the centre stands the Torre Vella, a 16th-century defensive tower that is now a cultural space. Near the promenade you’ll see the chalets quarter, early 20th-century summer houses with Modernista details. On the outskirts is a big, very popular theme park.

Free tours and guided visits

In Salou, tip-based free tours are rare, and the main offer is guided trips to the surrounding area. From here it’s very easy to reach Tarragona, which does have free tours and guided visits to the remains of Tarraco, a World Heritage Site: amphitheatre, circus and walls. Reus, a few kilometres away, has guided routes through its Modernisme and around Gaudí’s birthplace.

Other common trips go to Poblet monastery, the wineries of the Priorat or the Ebro Delta, with boat rides and birdwatching. There are also boat trips along the coast to Cambrils, a neighbouring town with a fishing port and good seafood. These outings are easy to arrange without a car, as the area has good transport links.

How long to spend

Salou is a beach destination and most people stay a week. Two days are enough for the essentials: one for the promenade, the coves and the coastal path, and another for Tarragona. If you add Reus, Poblet or the Delta, allow one or two more days.

Where to stay

The area around the Passeig de Jaume I and Llevant beach is the most practical: the sea, the restaurants and the centre are all within walking distance. Ponent is a little more family-oriented and quieter, next to the beach of the same name. If you’re after peace and views, Cap de Salou has hotels and apartments near the coves, although it’s a bit further from the centre.
