What to see in El Viso del Alcor

Must-sees

El Viso del Alcor is in the Los Alcores area of Seville province, on a ridge overlooking the Guadalquivir plain. Its main monument is the church of Santa María del Alcor, in the Sevillian Mudéjar style, built from the late 15th century and altered many times. It has three naves with arches framed by alfiz mouldings and an apse crowned by a Renaissance dome, and holds the image of the patron saint and a relic of the True Cross.

Another must-see is the former convent of Corpus Christi, whose church keeps a Baroque altarpiece and whose building now houses the town hall. Stroll along Calle Real, with 19th-century mansions, and the sloping streets of the old town. For views, climb to La Muela park, with a viewpoint over the plain. In the local kitchen, menudo, a tripe stew, is the town's signature dish.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or guided visits for tourists in El Viso del Alcor. The easiest option is to explore the centre on your own, as the monuments are close together. If you want guided visits, Carmona, a few kilometres away, has routes through its historic centre and Roman necropolis, and Seville offers plenty of free walking tours and day trips to the surrounding towns.

How long to spend

The town can be seen in a morning: the church of Santa María del Alcor, the Corpus Christi convent, Calle Real and La Muela park. Ideally combine it with Carmona or Mairena del Alcor on the same day and have lunch in the area. During Holy Week and the patron saint's celebrations the atmosphere changes a lot and is worth seeing.

Where to stay

Accommodation in El Viso del Alcor is scarce, so most people sleep elsewhere. Carmona, very close, has hotels in and around its historic centre and is a perfect base for exploring Los Alcores. If you prefer a city, Seville is less than half an hour away by car and lets you combine the visit with other towns in the province. Mairena del Alcor is another nearby option.
