What to see in Conil de la Frontera

Must-sees

Conil is a white village of narrow streets running down to the sea. Start at the Torre de Guzmán, all that remains of the old castle, and continue through the Puerta de Conil to Plaza de España, the hub of local life. Around the old town you will find whitewashed houses, small churches and plenty of bars serving good fish and seafood.

The beaches are the other half of the trip. Los Bateles is right by the village and La Fontanilla a little to the north, with its promenade. Beyond them are the Calas de Roche, small coves between cliffs. To the south is El Palmar, a long beach well known for surfing. Bluefin tuna caught with the traditional almadraba nets is part of the village’s identity, especially in spring.

Free tours and guided visits

There are hardly any free tours in Conil. The usual options are guided visits, outdoor activities and excursions from here. Some guided walks of the old town explain the village’s history, the role of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia and its link with the almadraba, a way of fishing tuna practised for centuries.

Among the most interesting options are kayak or walking routes along the Calas de Roche, surf lessons at El Palmar and horse rides along the coast. Short trips from Conil go to Vejer de la Frontera, Cape Trafalgar, Cádiz and Jerez to visit sherry bodegas.

How long to spend

The village takes two or three hours to explore, with stops at the Torre de Guzmán and Plaza de España. Most people stay several days and alternate beach and excursions. With three or four days you can spend one on the coves, another on El Palmar and Cape Trafalgar, and another on Vejer or Cádiz.

Where to stay

The centre and the Los Bateles area are the most practical: you are by the beach and the old town, with restaurants all around. La Fontanilla is a little quieter and still a stroll from the centre. If you prefer calm or are coming to surf, El Palmar and the Roche area have apartments and rural houses, but a car is almost essential to get around there.
