What to see in Lloret de Mar

Must-sees

Lloret de Mar is above all about the sea. The main beach runs along the front of the town and has a lively promenade, with the sculpture of the Dona Marinera looking out to the horizon from the rocks. To the south is Fenals beach, wider and more family-oriented, and between them are hidden coves such as Sa Caleta. The coastal path links several of them above the cliffs and is the best way to see the coast on foot.

In the old town, the church of Sant Romà stands out, with Modernista additions and roofs of colourful ceramic tiles. The legacy of the indianos, locals who made their fortune in the Americas, can be seen in houses such as Can Font and in the Modernista cemetery. The Museu del Mar tells this seafaring story. On the Santa Cristina cliff are the Santa Clotilde Gardens, with terraces and steps facing the sea.

Free tours and guided visits

There are few free walking tours in Lloret and they mostly run in high season. When they are offered, they are pay-what-you-like walks around the old town, the promenade and the indianos route, with their houses and their cemetery. It is an easy way to understand how the town went from fishing to tourism.

The most useful guided options are the trips. Boat trips along the Costa Brava let you see coves you cannot reach by land and usually stop at Tossa de Mar, with its walled town. There are also day trips to Girona, Barcelona and Montserrat, as well as kayaking and snorkelling.

How long to spend

One day is enough to see Lloret itself: the beach, the old town and a stretch of the coastal path. But almost everyone comes for longer, about four or five days. That way you can alternate beach days with a boat trip to Tossa, a morning in the Santa Clotilde Gardens and a trip to Girona or Barcelona. Spring and September are good times to go.

Where to stay

The centre, by the main beach, is the most practical area: shops, restaurants and the bus station are close, although in summer it is noisy at night. Fenals is quieter and popular with families, with hotels a few steps from the sand. If you want calm and views, look at the developments on the hills, although a car is almost essential there.
