What to see in San Clemente

Must-sees

San Clemente is in the La Mancha of Cuenca, and its historic centre, protected as a historic-artistic ensemble, is one of the grandest in the province. Everything revolves around the Plaza Mayor, presided over by the Renaissance town hall, with the large coat of arms of Charles I on its façade. Inside are the tourist office and a museum of prints by contemporary artists. Opposite stands the church of Santiago Apóstol, mixing late Gothic and Renaissance, with side chapels worth a look.

A Baroque arch links the Plaza Mayor with the Plaza del Pósito, home to the Royal Granary and the old prison, now a museum. The Torre Vieja, the town's only medieval building, houses an ethnographic museum and has a viewpoint at the top. It's worth wandering to see the 16th-century noblemen's mansions, such as the Casa de los Picos, and the convents, which can only be seen from outside. On the way out of town, a bridge over the Rus river completes the walk.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or fixed tour companies in San Clemente. The practical approach is to stop first at the tourist office, in the town hall itself, to get a map and ask whether guided visits are scheduled for your dates. The museums in the centre can be visited on your own. If you're driving, it's easy to combine the town with Belmonte castle, less than half an hour away.

How long to spend

Half a day, three or four unhurried hours, is enough for the historic centre, the museums and the climb up the Torre Vieja. If you want to add Belmonte or the Segóbriga archaeological park, within reasonable reach, plan a full day and stay in the area.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in the centre, near the Plaza Mayor, where there are small hotels and houses in traditional buildings, all within walking distance. The streets leading to the outskirts have a few simpler options with easy parking. If you can't find a room, Belmonte has charming places to stay and is close by.
