What to see in Cedeira

Must-sees

Cedeira is a seafaring town in the north of A Coruña province, set at the head of a small, sheltered estuary. Its old town, on the riverbank, keeps narrow streets and traditional houses. Next to the centre are A Magdalena, a long beach with calm water, and the harbour, known for its goose barnacles.

Above the mouth of the estuary stands the Castillo de la Concepción, an 18th-century fortress with sea views. A few kilometres away is San Andrés de Teixido, a pilgrimage sanctuary much loved in Galicia. From the Serra da Capelada, the Garita de Herbeira viewpoint looks out over some of the highest cliffs in Europe.

Free tours and guided visits

There are hardly any free walking tours in Cedeira; guided visits and excursions are the norm. Some walks cover the old town, the harbour and the castle, explaining the town's fishing tradition and the importance of goose barnacles on this coast. They are short walks of one or two hours, useful for getting to know the town before heading into the hills.

The most interesting outings go through the Serra da Capelada to San Andrés de Teixido, the Garita de Herbeira and the Punta Candieira lighthouse, stopping at viewpoints over the sea. There are also coastal hikes, kayak trips on the estuary and excursions to Cabo Ortegal and Ortigueira, further north.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the town: a stroll around the old town, the harbour and the beach, and the climb to the castle at sunset. If you want to see the Serra da Capelada and San Andrés de Teixido at a relaxed pace, allow a full day. With two or three days you can add Cabo Ortegal, the local beaches and a hike or two.

Where to stay

Cedeira's old town and the area around the harbour are the best places to stay: seafood restaurants, bars and everything within walking distance. The area near A Magdalena beach is quieter and handy in summer. If you prefer nature, the surrounding parishes have rural houses, though you'll need a car.
