What to see in Sanxenxo

Must-sees

Sanxenxo is one of the best-known beach destinations in the Rías Baixas. Its centre revolves around Silgar beach, beside the marina and the seafront promenade, with terraces and plenty of atmosphere in summer. To the west are Areas beach, Canelas and Portonovo, a fishing village with a working port. Beyond stretches A Lanzada, a long beach open to the Atlantic, highly rated for surfing.

Boats leave Sanxenxo for the island of Ons, part of the Atlantic Islands National Park, with beaches and waymarked paths. Nearby is Combarro, in Poio, with its granaries by the sea and stone streets. On the other side, O Grove and the island of A Toxa complete the visit. Pontevedra, with a beautifully kept pedestrian old town, is a short drive away.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-wish free tours are uncommon in Sanxenxo. Excursions are the norm here: the boat to the island of Ons, with a free or guided visit of the national park, and catamaran trips on the estuary with a visit to the mussel rafts, which leave mainly from O Grove. There are also guided visits to Combarro, to Albariño wineries in the area and walks through Pontevedra’s old town.

How long to spend

If you only want to see the town and its beaches, half a day is enough. Most people, though, spend several days and use Sanxenxo as a base. With three or four days you can give one to the island of Ons, another to Combarro and Pontevedra, and another to O Grove, A Toxa and A Lanzada, leaving time for the beach and long seafood lunches.

Where to stay

Silgar and the centre are the most practical if you want the beach, restaurants and the marina close at hand, although August is very busy. Portonovo is a good alternative, with a seafaring feel, good food and its own port with boats to Ons. Those seeking peace and nature can look at places near A Lanzada or higher up with views of the estuary.
