What to see in Vilches

Must-sees

Vilches is in northern Jaén province, between the last foothills of the Sierra Morena and the olive groves of El Condado. On the hilltop are the remains of the castle, with the so-called Cubo de la Villa and a vaulted passage, and beside them the hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo, built in the 18th century on an earlier church. From the top you can see the whole municipality. In the centre, the church of San Miguel Arcángel holds a Baroque altarpiece and objects that tradition links to the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.

The big visit is outside the village. Giribaile, where the Guadalimar and Guadalén rivers meet, brings together an Iberian oppidum, an Almohad castle and a rock face with carved caves associated with an old monastic community. The municipality also has several reservoirs, such as the Guadalén, La Fernandina and Giribaile, offering plenty of shoreline for walking, fishing or water sports.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular guided visits in Vilches. The most practical approach is to explore the village on your own and ask the town council whether any visit to Giribaile is organised, as that's where an explanation helps most. On the reservoirs there are water activities and nature routes. You can also combine the visit with Úbeda and Baeza, less than an hour away, where there are far more guided tours.

How long to spend

The village, the church and the climb to the castle take a couple of hours. Giribaile needs another half day, as you drive there and then walk a while to the caves and the castle. If you fancy some time by the water, a full day gives you time for everything. With two days you can add La Carolina or Las Navas de Tolosa, very close.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Vilches is limited, with a few rural houses in the village and places in the countryside, especially near the reservoirs, a good option if you want peace or are coming for water sports. For more choice, La Carolina and Linares are a short distance away. If you'd rather sleep in a monumental city, Úbeda and Baeza make a comfortable base for seeing the area by car.
