What to see in Langreo

Must-sees

Langreo is one of the municipalities of the Nalón mining basin, in central Asturias, and its history is tied to coal and steel. It has no single town centre: it is spread across several settlements, above all Sama, home to the town hall and the neo-Gothic church of Santiago, and La Felguera, which grew up around the steelworks. In Ciaño stands the medieval tower of La Quintana, one of the few old remains in the municipality.

The main draw is industrial heritage. The Samuño Valley Mining Ecomuseum is toured on a mining train that leaves El Cadavíu station, runs more than a kilometre underground through a 19th-century gallery and reaches the San Luis pit, where you ride the cage up to the surface. In La Felguera, the Steel Museum occupies an old cooling tower and explains the history of steel in Asturias. To stretch your legs, the riverside walk along the Nalón links Dorado park with Ciaño, past bridges and figures from Asturian mythology.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Langreo. The usual format is the visit to the mining ecomuseum, organised in train departures, and to the Steel Museum, best combined on the same day. The municipal tourist office can advise on routes through the neighbourhoods and the mining heritage. If you are in Oviedo or Gijón, some industrial tourism trips through the mining valleys include Langreo among their stops.

How long to spend

A full day covers the main sights. In the morning, the Samuño ecomuseum, which takes a few hours between the train ride and the pit. In the afternoon, the Steel Museum in La Felguera and a stroll around Sama and Dorado park. If you are interested in mining, add a second day to visit other pits and museums in the Nalón valley, a few kilometres away.

Where to stay

Sama and La Felguera are the most practical areas, with services, restaurants and good train and road links to the rest of Asturias. If you prefer a quieter setting, the hillside hamlets have rural houses with views of the valley. Choice is limited, so many people sleep in Oviedo, less than half an hour away, and visit Langreo on a day trip.
