What to see in Baltanás

Must-sees

Baltanás is the main town of the Cerrato in Palencia, an area of high plains and gentle valleys in the south-east of the province. Its best-known image is the wine cellar quarter, a hill riddled with hundreds of underground cellars whose ventilation chimneys, called zarceras, poke up through the grass. It is one of the largest such groups in Castile and León and deserves an unhurried walk along its paths.

In the town, the large church of San Millán dominates the skyline. The Cerrato Castellano Museum helps you understand the area through its history, trades and traditional way of life. Food is part of the visit too: roast suckling lamb and garlic soup are dishes closely tied to this land.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Baltanás. What you can book is a visit to the Cerrato Castellano Museum, which gives you context before exploring the cellars and the town on your own. Some cellars occasionally open to the public, but do not count on it unless you confirm beforehand. From Palencia, about 35 kilometres away, the drive is easy and lets you combine several stops in the Cerrato.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the cellar quarter, the church and the museum. If you want to have lunch in town and see the hill in the afternoon light, give it the day. With a second day you can visit other places in the Cerrato, such as the Visigothic church of San Juan de Baños in Baños de Cerrato, or the Canal de Castilla where it crosses the area.

Where to stay

Baltanás has few places to stay, mainly rural houses in the town, near the square and the church, from where you can walk up to the cellar quarter. It is a quiet base for exploring the Cerrato. For more variety, Palencia is the most practical alternative, under half an hour's drive away, and Dueñas or Venta de Baños are also handy.
