What to see in Ceclavín

Must-sees

Ceclavín is in the west of Cáceres province, in a municipality that forms almost a peninsula between the river Alagón, the Tagus and the Rivera de Fresnedosa. Its great monument is the church of Nuestra Señora del Olmo, built between the late 15th and mid-16th centuries, with a Renaissance altarpiece and a Baroque organ. On the square stands the clock tower, bearing the arms of Philip II, and not far away the Manueline-style pillory.

It is worth getting lost in its streets of stone houses, with balconies, coats of arms and traditional chimneys. The village is known for its many hermitages, spread around the village and the countryside, and above all for its pottery. Barro enchinao, decorated with small inlaid fragments of quartz, is the most characteristic piece and a good excuse to take home a souvenir made in the village itself.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Ceclavín. The best-known activity is a boat trip on the river Alagón around its meeting with the Tagus, an easy way to see the river gorges and the birds nesting on their walls. The old village is easy to explore on your own, and from Cáceres or Alcántara you can combine the visit with other villages in the area.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the village, the church, the square and a few hermitages. If you add the boat trip, allow a long half day or a relaxed full day. With a second day you can visit Alcántara, with its Roman bridge and its convent, or explore the banks of the Alagón and the Rivera de Fresnedosa.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Ceclavín is limited and centres on rural houses and apartments in the village, which let you get around on foot. For more options, Alcántara is very close and has more accommodation, and Coria or the city of Cáceres work as bases if you want to combine several villages in the area by car.
