What to see in Ribera del Fresno

Must-sees

Ribera del Fresno is in the Tierra de Barros area, south of Mérida, among vineyards, olive groves and dehesa. It is the birthplace of the Enlightenment poet Juan Meléndez Valdés, born here in the 18th century. The most important building is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia. According to tradition, the village's name comes from an ash tree, fresno, that grew by the stream.

In the old centre, the Vargas-Zúñiga palace stands out, with a Baroque façade, as do the Poor Clares convent and the old hospital. Several hermitages are scattered around the municipality, among them that of the Virgen del Valle, the patron saint. The village is part of the Ribera del Guadiana wine area, so the vineyard landscape is part of the visit.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Ribera del Fresno. Most people explore the old centre on their own and ask at the town hall about visits to the church or the convent, which may depend on service times. For a guided tour, the easiest option is a guided visit in Mérida and then a drive over, or combining the village with Tierra de Barros wineries.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the village, the church and the palace. To make the most of the day, add a walk in the Sierra Grande de Hornachos, a short distance away, or a visit to a local winery. With two days you can add Mérida and its Roman monuments, less than an hour away by car.

Where to stay

Ribera del Fresno has little accommodation, basically a rural house and some apartments. The most practical option is to stay in Almendralejo or Villafranca de los Barros, very close and with more hotels. If you want to combine the visit with Roman heritage, Mérida is the best base: it has the widest choice in the area and lets you explore the Tierra de Barros by car.
