What to see in Alcúdia

Must-sees

Alcúdia is in the north of Majorca, between the bays of Alcúdia and Pollença. Its old town keeps its medieval wall, part of which you can walk along the top of. Go in through the Porta de Mallorca or the Porta del Moll and stroll its stone streets to the church of Sant Jaume. Right next to it are the ruins of Pollentia, the ancient Roman city, with its theatre.

A few kilometres away, Port d’Alcúdia has a long beach of fine sand and shallow water, good for children. If you like walking, climb to the hermitage of La Victòria, on the La Victòria peninsula, with views of both bays. To the south, s’Albufera Nature Park is a wetland that is ideal for birdwatching.

Free tours and guided visits

Alcúdia has guided walks of the old town and the wall, some of them pay-what-you-like. They explain the Roman and medieval history and life inside the walls. Even so, guided visits and day trips from here are the most common format. The guided visit to Pollentia is worthwhile. Boat trips to Cap de Formentor and its coves also leave from here, as do tours of the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site. Another popular option is a day trip to Sóller, Valldemossa or Pollença.

How long to spend

You can see the old town and Pollentia in a morning at a good pace. If you are staying a few days, four or five let you combine the beach and sightseeing without rushing. One for Alcúdia and La Victòria, another for Formentor and Pollença, another for s’Albufera and one more for the Tramuntana.

Where to stay

If you want the beach, Port d’Alcúdia and the Alcúdia beach area have most of the hotels and plenty of services. If you prefer history and calm, stay in the old town, inside or beside the wall. There are houses and small hotels in old buildings. The two areas are a few kilometres apart, with frequent buses in season.
