What to see in Castillo de Garcimuñoz

Must-sees

Castillo de Garcimuñoz is a small village in Cuenca province, in the middle of the La Mancha plain, named after the fortress that dominates it. The present castle was built in the 15th century by order of Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, over the remains of an earlier castle and an Andalusí fortress. It has round corner towers and a Gothic doorway with coats of arms. Most striking is its recent restoration by the architect Izaskun Chinchilla, who added contemporary structures that let you walk the walls without hiding them and turned the towers into viewpoints over the fields.

The village's history is closely tied to literature. Prince Don Juan Manuel, author of Count Lucanor, lived here, and the poet Jorge Manrique was fatally wounded here during the assault on the fortress, remembered by a cross in the village. Inside the walls, the church of San Juan Bautista was built using stone from the castle itself. The old convent of San Agustín and the streets of the historic centre complete the walk.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Castillo de Garcimuñoz. The castle is visited on your own, and the rest of the village is easy to explore on foot. If you want guided visits, the practical option is to combine the stop with other castles in the area, such as Belmonte or Alarcón, or with trips from Cuenca.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the castle, the church and a stroll around the village. It is a stop that fits nicely into a route of La Mancha castles: in a day you can add Belmonte or Alarcón, and with two days add the city of Cuenca and its hanging houses.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village itself is very limited, with a rural house or two in the centre next to the castle, ideal if you want absolute peace. Most people stay in nearby towns with more beds, such as Belmonte, which also has its own castle, or San Clemente, with a very well-kept historic centre. If you prefer a city, Cuenca is less than an hour away by car and has many more options.
