What to see in Casas-Ibáñez

Must-sees

Casas-Ibáñez is the most important town in La Manchuela, in Albacete province, a plain between the rivers Júcar and Cabriel with a long winemaking tradition. The main building is the 17th-century Baroque church of San Juan Bautista, which holds an 18th-century ivory Christ. Next to it, look out for the Rococo Ochando chapel, one of the most refined corners of the church.

On the outskirts, in a park, is the hermitage of the Virgen de la Cabeza, the patron saint, at the heart of the spring festivities. South of the town rises San Jorge hill, with paths and green areas for walking or cycling. The Camino de Santiago de la Lana, linking Alicante with Burgos, also passes through Casas-Ibáñez. The great draw of the surroundings is the gorges of the Júcar and the Cabriel.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Casas-Ibáñez. The activity you will find is a visit to a Manchuela winery with a wine tasting, the best way to understand why this area lives from its vineyards. For guided heritage visits, people usually head to Alcalá del Júcar, with its castle and houses hanging over the gorge, or to the Hoces del Cabriel Nature Reserve, which has routes and nature activities.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the town, the church and the hermitage. If you add the winery visit, allow a long half day. Two days is ideal: one for Casas-Ibáñez and Manchuela wine, and another for Alcalá del Júcar and the gorges. If you love nature, the Hoces del Cabriel can take up another full day.

Where to stay

Casas-Ibáñez has some accommodation in the town itself, with guesthouses and rural houses, and is a practical base thanks to its central position in the area. For a more picturesque setting, Alcalá del Júcar has rural houses and apartments on the slopes of the gorge, though at weekends it fills early. Albacete, a little over fifty kilometres away, is the alternative with the most beds.
