What to see in Monzón

Must-sees

Monzón is the main town of the Cinca Medio, in eastern Huesca province, and its skyline is defined by the castle on a hill above the town. It was a Moorish fortress that later passed to the Knights Templar and became their main commandery in the Crown of Aragon. The future King James I was educated within its walls as a child. Today it houses an interpretation centre on the Templars, and from the top you can see the whole Cinca valley.

Below, the co-cathedral of Santa María del Romeral, Romanesque in origin, hosted several parliaments of the Crown of Aragon. In the old town there are grand houses such as the Palacio de los Luzán and the Casa de Pano, as well as the town hall. Monzón is the birthplace of Joaquín Costa, and his house is now a space devoted to him. By the river, the La Pinzana centre helps you discover the Cinca riverside woods.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Monzón, but there are guided visits. The most complete covers the historic centre and climbs to the Templar castle, explaining the Order of the Temple and James I's childhood. There's also a private tour option, useful if you're with family or a group and want to set your own pace. The castle can also be visited independently thanks to its interpretation centre, and at Christmas many people come to see its large nativity scene.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the castle and the old town. If you add the co-cathedral, Joaquín Costa's house and a walk at La Pinzana, allow a full day. With two days you can visit Barbastro and the Somontano, with its wineries, or head up to Alquézar and the Sierra de Guara.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in the centre, between the co-cathedral and Calle Mayor, to do everything on foot and walk up to the castle without the car. Monzón is a medium-sized town with enough hotels and apartments, also near the motorway exits, more convenient if you're driving. Barbastro, a quarter of an hour away, is a good alternative if you want to combine the visit with the Somontano.
