What to see in Mondariz

Must-sees

Mondariz-Balneario is a small town in inland Pontevedra that grew up around its mineral waters. At the end of the 19th century it became a prestigious spa, and its stately air is still noticeable. The main draw is the spa itself and the Palacio del Agua, where you can enjoy thermal circuits.

It is worth strolling through the park and visiting the Gándara spring, the best-known source, sheltered by a pavilion. The river Tea runs very close and has pleasant riverside paths among the trees. The atmosphere is relaxed, designed for resting rather than intensive sightseeing.

Free tours and guided visits

You won’t find regular free walking tours in Mondariz, as it is a very small place. Guided visits around the spa explaining its history and that of its summer visitors are sometimes run, but not on a fixed schedule. If you are interested, ask at the tourist office or at the spa itself.

The excursions from here are the most interesting part. Vigo is less than an hour away and has free walking tours of its old town. You can also visit Tui and its cathedral, by the Portuguese border, or Baiona. In summer, a boat trip to the Cíes Islands is highly recommended, but access is limited and authorisation must be requested in advance.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in a few hours, but Mondariz is made for staying. Two or three days let you combine the spa, walks along the river Tea and an excursion. If you also want to see Vigo, Tui and the Rías Baixas coast, a stay of four or five days gives you time without rushing.

Where to stay

Accommodation is concentrated in the spa itself and the village centre, all very close together. Staying there lets you come and go from the thermal circuits without the car. If you want more choice or plan lots of outings, Ponteareas is next door. A car is the most practical way to get around the area.
