What to see in Alcalá la Real

Must-sees

Alcalá la Real can be recognised from afar by the Fortaleza de la Mota, which dominates the town from a hill. It was a key stronghold on the frontier between the Nasrid kingdom of Granada and Castile, which is why it has walls, towers and several gates. Inside the enclosure are the Renaissance Iglesia Mayor Abacial and the remains of the old medieval quarter. The views over the Sierra Sur de Jaén are wide.

Down in the town, it is worth strolling along the Paseo de los Álamos and seeing the Renaissance Fuente de los Álamos. The 18th-century Palacio Abacial houses the municipal museum, with archaeological pieces from the district. The church of the Encarnación and the sloping streets leading up to the fortress complete a pleasant, quiet walk.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are uncommon in Alcalá la Real. The usual option is the guided visit to the Fortaleza de la Mota, which at many times of year includes re-enactments or theatrical activities and explains the history of the frontier well. Going with a guide helps you understand the role of each tower and of the church.

For excursions, the town is part of the Jaén province castles and battles route, and from here you can visit other fortresses in the area. It is also a good base for the Sierra Sur, with hiking routes and white villages, or for reaching Priego de Córdoba and Granada, both less than an hour away.

How long to spend

Half a day or a full day is enough. Spend the morning at the Fortaleza de la Mota, without rushing, because the enclosure is large and the climb takes time. In the afternoon, go down to the centre to see the Palacio Abacial, the Paseo de los Álamos and the churches. If you stay two days, use the second to explore the Sierra Sur or visit Priego de Córdoba.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to stay in the centre, between the Paseo de los Álamos and the street leading up to the fortress. From there you can walk to everything worthwhile and have restaurants close by. If you prefer peace and have a car, there are rural houses in the municipality's hamlets and in the Sierra Sur. They are a good option for combining your visit with nature routes.
