What to see in Miravet

Must-sees

Miravet is a village in the Ribera d'Ebre, in Tarragona, overlooking a bend in the river. Its best-known image is the Templar castle crowning the hill, one of the finest examples of the order's Romanesque military architecture in Europe. Inside it keeps the refectory, the church and the parade ground, and from its walls you look out over the whole Ebro valley.

Below the castle, the old quarter of Cap de la Vila climbs in steep streets up to the Església Vella. By the river is the pas de barca, a traditional ferry that crosses the Ebro without an engine, using the current and a cable. In the Raval dels Canterers the pottery tradition lives on, with workshops still working the clay. From the opposite bank you get the best photo of the village.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Miravet. You can explore the castle on your own, and at certain times there are guided visits telling its Templar history. The rest is done on foot: the old village, the ferry and the potters. From Tarragona or the coast there are trips combining Miravet with the Battle of the Ebro sites in Gandesa and Corbera.

How long to spend

Allow three or four hours for the castle and the old village, including the ferry crossing. Add a kayak trip on the Ebro or a visit to the Battle of the Ebro sites and make it a full day. With two days you can add Tortosa or the Priorat, a short drive away.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Miravet is limited, with rural houses and the odd small place in the old village and near the river. Staying there lets you see the castle lit up and the village at peace. If you cannot find a room, Móra d'Ebre is very close and has more services. Gandesa is another alternative if you are combining the visit with Terra Alta.
